(Helix Records) Kitchener Ontario’s Helix is a band with a split personality. Live they are one of this country’s most dynamic on-stage performers with a heavy metal persona that rivals any major international live act. Yet on the radio; its soft rock, pop tracks like ` Gimme, Gimme Good Lovin’ and their A Foot In Cold Water’s `Make Me Do’ which attracted the majority of their radio airplay. So it’s probably a good ploy to release a best-of, 21-track CD which only focuses on their own material. Taken in its own context, this Best Of stands up because it does prove the band can cover the entire pop-rock gamut of material. From pop ballads like `Deep Cuts The Knife’ and the Bon Jovish `Good To The Last Drop’ to the anthemic `Wild In The Streets’, their initial breakthrough effort `Heavy Metal Love’ through to their classic `Rock You’,Helix cover all the bases. Lead vocalist Brian Vollmer powers their vocal arsenal, propelled by twin guitarists Brent Doener and Kaleb Duck and a solid bottom end with bassist Daryl Gray and drummer Greg (Fritz) Hinz, a vastly underrated outfit which still can rock with the best of them. A bonus track here is their humourous, tongue-in-check `All I Want For Christmas Is The Leafs To Win The Cup’, keep dreaming fellas!
