October 13, 2023 – Today, Juno Award winning, alt-rockers MONOWHALES return with their electric new single “Backbone”. This dynamic song, produced by lead guitarist Zach Zanardo, serves as both anthem and ballsy declaration of one’s ability to withstand the pressure of toxic relationships. Of ‘Backbone’, vocalist Sally Shaar reveals, the song “embodies the struggle of reclaiming my own power and breaking free from toxic relationships that have long held influence over my life. It’s my rock ‘n’ roll supervillain anthem”. Click here to listen to the song and here to the cinematic rendition of the song with visuals
With a cinematic music video shot and directed by acclaimed director Brittany Farhat of Good Job Hi Five (July Talk: Love Lives Here), “Backbone” the second of the band’s 3 self-produced songs, takes the band back to their hard – rock roots. Its visuals are a literal representation of the raw emotion portrayed throughout the song’s lyrics.
This new release comes just as the band prepares to headout on their massive North American tour that will see the Juno award winning group bringing their captivating live show to 27 markets across the US and Canada this fall. The American leg of the tour begins October 16th in Chicago Illinois, with Canadian dates commencing on November 16th in Victoria, BC. About MONOWHALES:
Exploding out of their hometown of Toronto, JUNO Award-winning band MONOWHALES have put a new lease on the alt rock genre. Their 2019 breakout single ‘RWLYD (Really Wanna Let You Down)’ made history as MONOWHALES became the only independent, self-managed band to chart at #2 at alt radio in Canada. Subsequent singles ‘All or Nothing’ and ‘Out With The Old’ both reached the Top 10, culminating in the release of MONOWHALES’ debut album ‘Daytona Bleach’ in March, 2021.
2022 was a landmark year for the band, with highlights including winning a JUNO Award for Breakthrough Group of the Year, supporting Mother Mother on their Canadian tour, playing some of the country’s biggest festivals, releasing their new album ‘Tunnel Vision’ and headlining their own tour across the country. Tunnel Vision’s two singles ‘CTRL^^^” and “RICH$$$” spent over 20 weeks in the Top 10.
2023 saw MONOWHALES tour Canada as direct support to Grandson and make appearances at Ottawa Bluesfest, Burlington Sound of Music, Sommo Festival and more. MONOWHALES have just announced a headline tour with dates across the USA and Canada, hot on the heels of their brand new singles “Hear Me Out” and “Backbone”.
