Grinning Streak – Barenaked Ladies

(Warner Music Canada) First off, who are these guys pictured on the cd jacket wearing Bay Street suits? Okay, relax people Barenaked Ladies have not sold their souls to corporate Canada – but they do look quite dashing! No, the Ladies launch their 25th anniversary with a  finely-tuned collection of 12 tracks that literally glow with self-confidence. Unlike their 2010 “All In Good Time” effort which came out right after the departure of co-lead vocalist Steven Page, this recording sees Ed Robertson emerge as a man totally in control of the band’s vocal direction. If anything, the Ladies have bounced back stronger than ever. Keyboardist Kevin Hearns, guitarist Jim Creeggan and drummer Tyler Stewart have closed ranks and produced a set of songs which ooze self-confidence.

From the opening techno groove of `Limits’ to the sing-along lyrical hook that powers their debut single `Boomerang’, the Ladies are back on top form. The recordings’ arrangements are totally current, yet they never overwhelm Robertson’s confident vocals and many of the tracks rank as the band’s best yet. Aside from `Limits’ and `Boomerang’, `Gonna Walk’ features a compelling arrangement while `Odds Are’ contains a great play on words. For those who prefer vintage BNL, the stripped down banjo and harmonica arrangement on `Smile’ and the acoustic guitar track `Give It Back To You’ will keep veteran pundits happy. With a major U.S tour on tap, it’s safe to say the Barenaked Ladies are back stronger than ever.
