From MUCHMUSIC in the 80s to Film Fests Around The World! THE SPOONS win big with music video!

From Hollywood to Bollywood, legendary Canadian band ‘Spoons’ video for “The First & Last Time” is among those selected for screening at eight (and counting!) prestigious International film festivals.

The growing list includes the world-renowned Cannes Short Film Festival, Lisbon Film Rendezvous, The Lift-Off Sessions at Pinewood Studios, South Georgian Bay Film Festival, Miami Independent Film Festival, Jaipur International Film Festival, and — right in their own backyard — the Toronto International Film Festival.

The video was also screened — and won Best Director, Music Video — at the Indo Global Film Festival.

Considering the iconic group were on the very first episode of MuchMusic, “now, almost 35 years later, we weren’t even sure making a video was relevant anymore,” frontman Gordon Deppe says of the industry where he and Sandy Horne first became a household name in 1980.

The duo would play an integral part in defining pop and new wave sounds throughout the decade with hits including “Nova Heart”, “Romantic Traffic”, “Old Emotions” and “Tell No Lies.” Their album Arias & Symphonies would go on to be named one of the 20 Most Influential Albums of The 80s by The Chart Magazine, and their song “Nova Heart” was recently included in Bob Mersereau’s book The Top 100 Canadian Singles.

And now, evoking all the fun of their most notorious ear-gems of hits, their newest 12-track missive — New Day New World — lands the band firmly in 2019.

Film festivals weren’t even something we’d considered,” Deppe continues. “Then again, this video is more like a little movie.

“Director Peter Sacco has never done a rock video before… He was best known for his ghost hunter TV show, Paranormal Profilers. It struck me that doing a music video that looked like a reality ghost hunter program would be pretty unique.”

Even more so, the tale hasn’t fully been told. “We decided to make it a three-part mini-series, with a ‘to be continued…’ at the end of each,” Deppe reveals. Following “The First & Last Time” will be “All the Wrong Things (In The Right Places)” and “Beautiful Trap.”

“There’s an underlying purpose to it all…” he hints. “Next year is the 40th anniversary of the Spoons. When you see the three videos together, it’ll all make sense!”

“The First & Last Time” and New Day New World are available now on CD, vinyl and digital via Sparks Music/Universal Music Canada.
