Former Big Sugar Bassist Garry Lowe Loses Cancer Battle

Former Big Sugar bassist Garry Lowe passed away Saturday at the age of 65 after a lengthy battle with cancer. A native of Kingston Jamaica, Lowe moved to Toronto in the mid 70’s where he performed with many touring reggae artists as a key session player. He would later form popular local band Culture Shock.

Big Sugar lead vocalist/guitarist Gordie Johnson became a big fan of Lowe’s while catching many of his appearances at Toronto’s Bamboo Club and eventually convinced Lowe to become a regular member of his band in July 1994.

Lowe was an omnipresent member of the band and it’s several reformations until his illness forced him out of the band two years ago.
