With six albums under its belt and continuously growing fan base around the world, Current Swell is primed to return on Oct. 16 with its latest collection, Buffalo.
The five-piece roots-rock outfit from Victoria, B.C. made the new album with acclaimed producer Colin Stewart (The New Pornographers, Yukon Blonde, Dan Mangan), taking a “no rush” approach. Without time constraints, the band was able to experiment and allow the recording process to evolve naturally, rather than trying to finish records on a deadline as they have done in the past. The result was every song was able to get special attention from each member, creating a more collaborative atmosphere than ever before.
Fans have already gotten a taste of Buffalo through the anthemic first single “High Life,” which conveys the feeling of disconnecting from the demands of living in the big city. As bassist/vocalist Louis Sadava says, “We released this song so we could play it all summer and see how audiences react to it. It’s not necessarily a song about getting older, it’s about getting wiser and having more refined tastes. The things that fulfill us aren’t the same as they used to be; family has definitely become a bigger priority, and we might opt for an adventure in nature rather than a night on the town.”
Other songs on Buffalo, such as “How Many Times,” show off Current Swell’s raw, rocking side that they more often display on stage, while the title track grew out of a jam session on a simple guitar melody that no one in the band was able to get out of their heads until a song became fully formed. The latest single “Bring It On Home” is a nostalgic, mid-paced track about the feeling of being away for a long time and finally coming home.
Along with Sadava, Current Swell’s primary members Scott Stanton (lead vocals/guitars) and Dave Lang (vocals/guitars) are excited to fulfill the expectations they’ve set for themselves on Buffalo through hard-earned confidence and well-worn grins. The band has a proven track record of sold-out tours in North America, Brazil, and Europe, and over 50 million streams worldwide.
Current Swell has opened for the likes of The Tragically Hip, Edward Sharpe, Xavier Rudd, Dispatch, Sam Roberts Band and The Cat Empire, and has made appearances at major festivals such as Byron Bay Bluesfest, Festivalma in Brazil, Winnipeg Folk Festival, Ottawa Bluesfest, Hurricane and Southside Festival in Germany, Bumbershoot in Seattle, and recently headlining Rifflandia Festival in British Columbia.
The band was also the winner of the Vancouver’s Peak Performance Project in 2011 and has had 5 top 20 songs on the commercial rock charts in Canada.
In January 2020 the band embark on a 20 date European tour, date and ticket information can be found here.
