The 1989 Music Express Awards staged February 14th at Mississauga’s Superstars Concert Venue was a memorable event for a number of reasons but the spotlight of the entire evening was a dazzling set by The Jeff Healey Band.

Televised by YTV and executed as a fund raiser for Orillia teenage burn victim Joe Phillion, the 1989 ME Awards not only paid tribute to top Canadian and International artists of that year but also featured star performances by the likes of Glass Tiger, Candi & The Backbeat, A&M’s Big Bang and an all-star encore performance of the Beatles’ With A Little Help From My Friends.

Yet the entire evening was overshadowed by a sizzling performance by the late and great Jeff Healey. To launch our new Throwback Thursdays segment in Music Express, we are thrilled to invite ME readers to once again observe one of North America’s top blues/rock performers at the peak of his career.
