EDMONTON – The Canadian Folk Music Awards (#CFMA2015), now in their 11th year, are coming to Edmonton, Alberta from November 6 – 8, 2015. Along with the gala awards event, the weekend features open-to-the-public showcases, workshops and live radio broadcast events. [Full day-by-day listings below.]
A highlight of the CFMA weekend are the two showcase concert evenings at the Parkview Community Hall (9135 146 Street). Single showcase tickets are $20 in advance via www.bit.ly/CFMA2015showcases and $25 at the door. On Friday, November 6, the evening features 2015 CFMA nominees Michael Jerome Browne, Jon Brooks, Sarah MacDougall, Miranda Currie, Rebecca Lappa, and Benjamin Dakota Rogers. Saturday, November 7 puts the spotlight on 2015 CFMA nominees Jory Nash, The Young Novelists, Jocelyne Baribeau, Dana Sipos, Mira Meikle and The Jerry Cans.
The CFMA weekend schedule is packed with free, open-to-the-public workshops. CKUA (9804 Jasper Ave NW) kicks off the workshops at 10 a.m. on Saturday, with an informative panel titled The Business of Folk. From noon until 4 p.m. on Saturday, the Uptown Folk Club hosts a series of workshops including Writing for the Cause, Songwriter Recent Creations and Instrumentation for Songwriters. From 4 p.m. – 6 p.m. Uptown Folk attendees are treated to songs and discussion on New Folk from some of Canada’s rising stars of folk music including 2015 nominees Rebecca Lappa and Benjamin Dakota Rogers. On Sunday at 1 p.m., musical director and accordionist Jason Kodie (Captain Tractor) hosts A Diversity of Strings at the Uptown Folk Club, while singer-songwriter Dana Wylie leads Our Roots are Showing – a sing-along of classic Canadian songs at CKUA. On Sunday, November 8, there is a special live-to-air edition of the popular two-hour CKUA radio show Folk Routes at 10:00 a.m. MT at The Newcastle Pub (#145, 8170 – 50 Street.) Tickets to the CKUA live broadcast are $10 and available at the door. The live event features 2015 CFMA nominees Oh Susanna, Lizzy Hoyt, Peter Katz and Catherine MacLellan in concert.
The CFMA gala event takes place at the Citadel Theatre (9828 101A Avenue Northwest) on Sunday, November 8, 2015 and features live performances from some of the best of Canada’s folk community. This year’s gala performance line-up includes Pharis and Jason Romero (2015 nominee), Jeffrey Straker, Mélisande [Électrotrad] (2014 recipient), Tequila Mockingbird Orchestra, Trent Severn (2013 nominee) and John Wort Hannam (2013 nominee, 2010 recipient). The gala is hosted, in both official languages, by award-winning musicians Connie Kaldor and Benoit Bourque (La Bottine Souriante) and is open to the public. Tickets for the gala are $48 (plus $2 administration fee) and are on sale here.
The CFMA will hand out twenty awards throughout the gala evening. Nominations for the CFMA were announced this September at Edmonton City Hall during the first annual #NationalStrum celebrating folk music across Canada. Born from a pool of volunteers deeply invested in the wealth and breadth of folk talent in Canada, the CFMA celebrate all genres of folk music from across Canada. Well known for having a v
ibrant culture of folk festivals, folk traditions and folk values, the country comes together for a weekend of celebration.

2015 CFMA nominee biographies
Canadian artists and groups whose albums were released in Canada between June 15, 2014 to June 14, 2015 were eligible to submit their work. The CFMA currently boast 19 categories and one special achievement award. For the category awards, five nominees are chosen for each category. A three stage jury process by 95 jurors located across Canada representing all official provinces, territories and languages determine the official winners in each category.
