Drake may have been down in the dumps that a sore ankle forced him to cancel recent concert dates in Toronto and Philadelphia but I am sure the news of his record-breaking 13 American Music Award nominations will cheer him up considerably.
Drake’s 13 nominations surpasses the 11 nominations chalked up by Michael Jackson in 1984 and caps an amazing year with the global success of his `Views’ release and the box-office smash of his “Summer 16” tour.
He was joined in the AMA announcement by Weeknd, Drake, Alessia Cara and Shawn Mendes who combined for 10 more nominations. The awards will be presented in Los Angeles November 20th and will be determined by public voting in the U.S only.
Other multiple nominations went to Drake’s BFF Rhianna with seven, Bieber and Adele scored five nominations followed by The Chainsmokers and Beyonce with four each and Weeknd, Twenty One Pilots, Carrie Underwood, Bryson Tiller and Fetty Wrap all scored three nominations each.
Shawn Mendes and Alessia Cara will go up against each other in the New Artist category and there’s bound to be at least one Canadian winner as Drake, Weeknd and Bieber are the only nominees in the Favourite Male Artist category.
