Toronto, ON (February 2, 2016) – The momentum established by Canadian artists; The Weeknd, Drake, Justin Bieber, Alessia Cara and Shawn Mendes in dominating the U.S Billboard charts during the last three months of 2015has carried over into the nominations for the 2016 JUNO Awards.
At a press conference staged Tuesday to Toronto’s Phoenix Concert Theatre The Weeknd garnered six nominations including Juno Fan Choice, Single Of The Year, Album Of The Year, Artist Of The Year, Songwriter Of The Year and R&B Soul Recording Of The Year.. The awards to be presented by by The Canadian Academy of Recording Arts and Sciences (CARAS) during the CTV awards telecast Sunday April 3rd in Calgary.
Close behind with five nods each were Drake and Justin Bieber, both running for JUNO Fan Choice*, Single of the Year, Album of the Year*, Artist of the Year. Drake also received a nomination for Rap Recording of the Year, while Justin Bieber was nominated for Pop Album of the Year*.
Vying for four categories each, Alessia Cara was nominated for JUNO Fan Choice*, Single of the Year, Breakthrough Artist of the Year* and R&B/Soul Recording of the Year; while Shawn Mendes was nominated for JUNO Fan Choice*, Album of the Year*, Artist for the Year and Pop Album of the Year*. Cara who is also scheduled to perform on the telecast with The Weeknd, Bryan Adams, Dean Brody and Sean Mendes said she is overwhelmed at all the attention she is receiving. “The be receiving all these award nominations and to get to perform on the show is a little hard to comprehend.” she said while attending the press conference which also confirmed that Burton Cummings will be induced into the CARAS Hall Of Fame.
